Weekly Update

Monday 13th July 2020

Good Morning Year Six,

Can you believe this is our last week in Year Six?!! How quick has this year gone?! I've been doing some reflecting on this academic year and what a year it has been! I have so many lovely memories of you all and I hope you do of Year Six as well, you'll definitely always remember Year Six!

I know this week isn't the normal way to end Year Six, but I am sure it will be just as special.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all on the zoom on Wednesday (details to follow) and then on Thursday!

I have attached some end of year activities underneath.

I hope you all have a lovely last week at primary school smiley Looking forward to seeing you all.

Monday 6th July

Good Morning Year Six,

It's been so so lovely seeing both Group A and Group B and then seeing you all on zoom!

I can't believe that we are into our last week and a half in Year Six, although it's not the way we would have liked to end your time in primary school I really hope you all enjoy it still.

I hope all the children found the zoom call with Mr Hunter and Ms Carter helpful this week. They suggested having a look at the Icknield website to have a feel for what the schools like.

I have some activities linked to transition that the children can have a look at underneath, as well as some fun activities.

Hope you all have a lovely week!

Good Morning Year 6!

I hope you all have had a lovely few days in the sun! It was so lovely seeing you all on Friday! I'm very much looking forward to seeing  Group B this week as well a Group A.

The weeks plan is up for you to have a look at, I have also attached some fun maths activities under this.

Miss Hawkins has let me know of a free course for parents and students transitioning from Primary to Secondary School. It focuses around the 4 most common questions students have about the transition:

Will I make friends?

Will I get bullied?

Will I get lost?

Will I be able to cope with the work?

From the introduction page there are links to webpages about transition from Young Minds the BBC.

https://www.schudio.tv/courses/supporting-primary-to-high-school-transition-for-parents-students

So please have a look if you're interested.

Hope you all have a lovely week smiley

I hope you all have had a lovely week and are looking forward to the week ahead smiley

If you have any hidden talents (singing, dancing, gymnastics etc) you want to share for the leavers event, please do email me the video asap.

I have attached underneath some activities that you can have a go at this week. The escape room can be done in groups (I know some of you like doing work over facetime/zoom) or individually.

I hope you have a lovely week. I'm looking forward to seeing Group A today and Group B soon smiley

Monday 15th June 2020

Good morning Year Six,

I hope you all have had a lovely weekend smiley

As we are teaching and moving towards opening school for all children, from today we will be amalgamating our daily updates into one weekly update.  This update will be available to read each Monday and will include a range of suggested activities that you can do throughout the week with your child.  All other home learning, including weekly planning, remains the same and can be found on our home learning page.  If you still have not requested a paper pack, and would like one, please get in touch.

This week I'm going to set some activites that Miss Price has kindly let us borrow, all linked to the #black lives matter movement.

First activity:

Watch the viedo below 'Celebrity Supply Teacher', Dr. Martin Luther King by Martin Bashir.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000k6hc/celebrity-supply-teacher-series-1-2-martin-bashir-history

After watching the video, please have a go at filling in the sheet below.

Answers are attached in a separate document beneath.

Second activity:

Watch this clip and answer the questions below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFH8QshWtww&list=PL7bv5sn4V_-il09Rf-aAHawMF0OS-GANd&index=30

'Harriet Tubman', taken from 'Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls' by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo.

1. Why do you think Harriet wanted the slave to escape?
2. What hit Harriet on the head?
3. How many enslaved people did Harriet free?
4. Would you describe Harriet as 'brave'? Why?
5. Choose three other powerful adjectives to describe Harriet Tubman

During the American Civil War, Harriet Tubman worked as a cook, a nurse, and even a spy. She is also considered to be the first African-American woman to serve in the military.

Create an acrostic poem, using each letter in Harriet's name to describe her or give a fact about her life. Decorate when you've finished!

E.G

H Her bravery freed hundreds of slaves
A African-American
R Resilient- she didn't stop fighting for freedom
R Racism was something she fought to change
I Inspirational for many reasons
E Everyone should hear about the amazing things she did
T Tenacious, tremendous and totally courageous

I hope you all have a lovely week, looking forward to seeing some of you in school todaysmiley

Good Morning Year Six,

It was lovely seeing half of you yesterday and I was so impressed with how sensible you all were throughout the day. I'm so sad I can't see all of you at the moment, but hopefully at some point I will.

I have attached a picture of our new class rules which Group A came up with. Group B will also be following these. These are just to keep us all safe while at school.

It was so lovely to hear of all the positive experiences Group A has had during lockdown, like: a cousin being born, spending more family time, learning to create a mosaic, running amazing distances, reading lots! I'd love to hear of some of the positives that the rest of you have had during lockdown.

I have been inspired by Alex's mosaic creation and have attached some mosaic templates for you to create your own (not quite the same standard as Alex's!)

I hope you all have a lovely day smiley

Good Morning Year Six,

I hope you all have had a lovely half term and have taken advantage of this wonderful weather!!

I am very much looking forward to seeing half of you today smiley and I know Miss Price is excited to see her group on Wednesday!

I've attached below a video to give you a little bit of information of what school will be like and to show you what the classroom looks like.

On the 'Home Learning' page is this weeks suggested learning at home.

To further support the current changes within school, all children and adults in Year Six will compile an updated list of "Rules and Expectations" today. These rules will be discussed and agreed and then displayed in the classroom and a copy will also  be sent home.

I hope if you are not in school today that you have a lovely day and I will see you soon I am sure smiley

Tuesday 12th May 2020

Good morning Year Six,

Looks a sunnier start to the day!

I can't believe that we should have been sitting our SATs this week, definitely brings me mixed emotions! I am so proud of you all, every single one of you worked incredibly hard throughout the year and it's a shame that you can't see for yourselves how far you have all come!

I found this poem that I really liked, so thought I'd share with you:

To all our Year 6’s,

As SATs week arrives it’s not quite the same,

The tests that were printed never came,

The displays all still; walls full of Maths ‘rules’,

But Year 6 very different, at present, in schools.

For some of you, happiness, lots of relief,

For others a sigh of pure disbelief,

That you worked really hard in advance of this week,

To get those top marks you did seek.

Algebra, fractions, the times table drills,

Inference, retrieval, in-depth reading skills,

Past, present, progressive…and all the SPAG terms,

You’ve practised and mastered them over the years.

Fear not though, the SATs, yes, won’t happen this term

But remember tests don’t measure everything you learn,

Primary subjects are varied; you’ve always tried your bet,

And many of those skills that you’ve gained can’t de defined by a test.

So here at Chalgrove, you’ve made us so proud

We sit here with pride and we shout this out loud…

“Year 6 you amaze us, you’ve come incredibly far…

And we don’t need a test to see how amazing you are!”

I hope you all have a lovely day smiley

Today at 1pm there is a Live WW2 Secret Bunker History lesson via facebook and youtube. Would be a really interesting lesson if you can access it.

Have a good day!
